Mystery city

I took a trip!

And then when I got back and looked through the pictures, I realized how much certain buildings and views resembled those of Kharkiv.

View from our apartment in Kharkiv:

View from the mystery city hotel room:

What do you think- does it look like Ukraine at all? And can you guess what city this is?

If you haven't already guessed, this picture will probably give it away :p

I swear this exact same tractor was everywhere in Ukraine too!

Have you ever been to this city? What were your impressions?

  1. The picture of the metro gave it away... Washington DC! I don't know why but the stations have always looked really 'soviet' to me! We lived there when my husband had to do his Russian language training...and I actually really liked it! Lots of good restaurants, great museums...and friendly people ( at least those I met at the dog park were!^^)! Enjoy you're time in DC ( and if you' ve never been, I'd recommend the Phillips collection, my favourite!)!!!

    1. Agreed! The other American underground metros I've seen (admittedly, not many) don't put much thought into design, they're very utilitarian and industrial. The DC stations I saw really evoked that sense of someone-actually-wanted-this-to-look-good like you see in Moscow and Kyiv. Oh, and there's the "ремонт" issue too, saw lots of that in DC's underground ;)

Hope you and your husband are doing well in Kyiv!

  2. Ha, I knew what it was before even looking at the photos. I say all the time how depressingly grey and soviet DC is!

  3. DC does NOT look like Ukraine at all, that's for sure. I have been there only for two days, but it was more than enough to figure.

Even the Shevchenko statue they have does not look like your usual Ukrainian Shevchenko; he's younger and prettier.

    1. Hi Artem! We must have had two completely different days : ) I'd like to see more of the city- residential and commercial areas- but only had time for the hotel area and government area on this trip.

Thanks for mentioning the Shevchenko statue- I had no idea he was featured there!! How did you find out about that? He does look a lot different than the Kharkiv version: similar pose but about a million times less intimidating. Almost wouldn't recognize him without that trademark moustache.
