Security Message from U.S. Embassy

Received the following message by email two days ago. Does anyone know the story behind this?

U. S. Embassy, Kyiv, Ukraine

Security Message for U.S. Citizens
May 24, 2012

The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens of recent instances of “corporate raider” actions taking place at businesses in various locations around Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine.  The most recent “corporate raider” example took place in the early evening on Sunday, May 20, 2012, when approximately 100 men armed with clubs swarmed the Lukiyanivka (Lukyanivska?) Market in Kyiv in connection with an ownership dispute.  The intruders physically attacked workers and vendors at the market.

Although these attacks are not directed at U.S citizens, we advise all U.S. citizens to be aware of their surroundings and exercise caution when visiting markets or other sites that have been the targets of these “corporate raiders” and report specific incidents of targeted violence to the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv or by calling the number(s) below.

  1. "Corporate raiders" ! Yikes. That sound kinda crazy. I'm curious about how that happened.

  2. Such things aren't uncommon here in Ukraine.

Usually these happen on some secluded or less public areas, like factories or office buildings.

There's nothing to oppose to such things, but more powerful physical offense with stronger 'government' background.

Just don't stay on their way if you're not ready to this. It's like you don't visit 'some' districts in USA today.

    USA (1930-1940) ~= Ukraine (1991-201x).
