Odessa in photos

Odessa, as seen December 26th - 28th, 2013.

Enjoy! : )

Morning fog at the Odessa train station.
The Saint Panteleimon Orthodox Church and its neighboring "Mister Sandwich" cafe.
Naked!

Found this cat on duty outside a discount shop.
Changing of the guard?

Cobblestones and horrendous traffic jams everywhere.
Forlorn duck across the street from the Morgan Club.
Plenty of opportunities to ride in carriages around Odessa.
Monument to Empress Katherine II.
View from our hotel window.
Entertainment at the corporate party.
Open bar again! : )
Girls reading on the steps of the Odessa mosque.
Didn't see much Euromaidan stuff going on here, except for the remnants of this "Everyone to Kyiv!" sticker
Statue of the city's first mayor opposite the Potemkin staircase.
The famed Potemkin Staircase and view of the port. December 28th, 2013.
Museum.
Odessa is full of old buildings like this...
... as well as well-kept masterpieces like this one.

As a poet once praised the city:
Radiant, beautiful Odessa!
Lying by the black-waved sea;
Mountain-crowned, wave-washed, white-towered,
Queen of grace and majesty.

What do you think of Odessa? Would you like to visit in the winter or would you prefer the sunshine and crowded beaches of the summer?

Radiant, beautiful Odessa!
Lying by the black-waved sea;
Mountain-crowned, wave-washed, white-towered,
Queen of grace and majesty.

  1. I've been to Odessa twice in my life, and both times these visits were not lucky.... perhaps I should go there once more :)

  2. Odessa certainly is the only city in all of Europe with such rich variety and/with deep decay... This is so unfortunate, since there's nearly 300 years of architectural history of the World in this city, but city's officials are more inclined to demolish an old mansion rather than preserve and reconstruct. Sort of sad, but I guess it's a course of time and nothing you can do. If only people had more culture and less greed, that would help.

    1. It's an honor to see what remains, at least. Thanks for your comment!
